Abstract:
Urban geographers and historians have documented the various mechanisms that maintained racial segregation in the heart of the US city from the late-19th century onward, mechanisms that include restrictive covenants, zoning ordinances, land use policies, redlining, policing, surveillance, and violence. By so doing, they have provided a clear framework for understanding the white spatial imaginary that has shaped the American city. What is less documented are the ways in which Black communities developed counter mechanisms to resist the dehumanization of segregation, thereby relegating Black actors and institutions to the sidelines of urban geography. In this paper I ask what would happen to our theoretical and empirical understanding of US cities during the long 20th century if we considered Black neighborhoods not as ghettos but as spaces of marronage, that is, white-abandoned spaces made into place through Black spatial agency. I do so by documenting and interrogating different types of Black institutions and networks that sustained life and maintained control over space in Chicago’s Bronzeville in the first half of the 20th century.
Elections will take place in-person, please join. Optional group dinner to follow.
