Historical Geography Specialty Group

The Historical Geography Specialty Group (HGSG) aims to:

1. to encourage historical geographic research;

2. to promote historical geographic education;

3. to promote the exchange of historical geographic ideas and information;

4. to promote the interests of historical geography within the discipline of geography; and

5. to develop contacts and coordination with other historical geography organizations and with related specialty groups within the AAG.

Originating in part as the Historical Geography Group with the establishment of the Historical Geography Newsletter following the 1971 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers (now the American Association of Geographers - AAG), the Historical Geography Specialty Group of the AAG was formed in 1979.
